Born in 1966 in the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Dr. Sowed Juma Mayanja obtained a bachelor’s degree in Sharia from the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia in 1990, and obtained a master’s degree in 1996, and a doctorate in the principles of jurisprudence in 2000, respectively. His Eminence also obtained a Higher Diploma in Education from the Islamic University of Uganda in 2003, and a Diploma in Law from the Institute of Law in Kampala in 2008. His Eminence has served in several positions, as a lecturer at the Faculty of Arabic Language and Islamic Studies at the Islamic University in Uganda, dean of the same faculty, then as dean of the aforementioned faculty. His Eminence also served as dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law, and head of the Sharia Department at the University of Zanzibar in Tanzania. He is currently a professor at the Islamic University of Uganda, and Imam-Khatib at Makerere University Mosque in Kampala, Uganda. His Eminence participated in numerous seminars on international humanitarian law in the Islamic Republic of Iran, on terrorism in Africa in the Republic of Sudan, and participated in the creation of the Union of African Scholars in the Republic of Mali. As a member of the Council of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy, His Eminence Dr. Sowed Juma Mayanja has represented the Republic of Uganda since 2021.
