Born in 1942 on the island of Fuvahmulah, one of the southern islands of the Maldives, H.Em. Sheikh Dr. Mohamed Rasheed Ibrahim memorized the Noble Qur’an at a young age, then studied at the Faydiya School on his island and at the College of the Righteous in Poilor in South India, then joined Al-Azhar University in Egypt, where he obtained an elementary certificate from Al-Azhar in 1963, a secondary school certificate in 1967, a secondary school diploma from the Faculty of Shari’a and Law in 1971, a master’s degree in comparative jurisprudence from the Faculty of Shari’a and Law in 1973, and a general diploma in education from the Faculty of Education in 1974, from the same university, respectively. His Eminence obtained a PhD from the Faculty of Revealed Knowledge and Humanities of the Islamic University of Maldives, entitled: “Problems of the Muslim Family in the Maldives and their Remedy in the Light of Sharia”.
His Eminence has assumed important scientific, administrative and political positions, including as a teacher at Abi Ubaidah School in Dammam, Saudi Arabia; professor and cultural supervisor at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh; and lecturer at the Faculty of Sharia at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh. He has also worked as Advisor to the President of the Republic of Maldives, Special Undersecretary to the President of the Republic, Deputy Minister of Justice, Minister of Justice and Islamic Affairs, Chief Justice of the Maldives, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, Chairman of the Committee for Translation of the Meanings of the Noble Qur’an into Maldivian, and Chairman of the Supreme Council of Ifta of the Republic of Maldives. His Eminence is the author of several books and research articles.
As a member of the Academy, His Eminence has been appointed as a representative member of the Republic of Maldives to the Council of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy since 1996.
