His Eminence Shaykh Dr. Muhammad Rashid Ibrahim was born in 1942 on Fuvahmulah Island, one of the southern islands of the Maldives. By the grace of Allah, he memorized the Holy Qur’an at an early age. He then studied at Al-Faydhiyyah School on his island and at Al-Baqiyat al-Salihat College in Vellore, South India. Thereafter, he joined Al-Azhar University in Egypt, where he obtained the Primary Certificate in 1963, the Secondary Certificate in 1967, and the Higher Degree (Licentiate) from the Faculty of Sharia and Law in 1971. He also earned a Master’s degree in Comparative Fiqh from the Faculty of Sharia and Law in 1973, a General Diploma in Education from the Faculty of Education at Al-Azhar University in 1974, and later obtained a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences at the Maldives Islamic University. His doctoral dissertation was entitled: “Problems of the Muslim Family in the Maldives and Their Remedies in the Light of Islamic Sharia.”
His Eminence was appointed a delegated member of the Council of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy, representing the Republic of Maldives in 1996. He held many important academic, administrative, and political positions, including serving as a teacher at Abu Ubaidah School in Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; then as a teacher and cultural supervisor at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh; and later as a lecturer in the College of Sharia at the same university. He also served as an advisor to the Presidency of the Republic of Maldives, Special Secretary to the Presidency, Deputy Minister of Justice, Minister of Justice and Islamic Affairs, Chief Justice of the Maldives (President of the Supreme Court), Chairman of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Chairman of the Committee for the Translation of the Meanings of the Holy Qur’an into the Maldivian language, and Chairman of the Supreme Fatwa Council of the Republic of Maldives.
