Born in Dakar, the Republic of Senegal, in 1934, Prof. Rawane Mbaye received his foundational education in sciences of languages at traditional schools, then earned a B.A. in philosophy and literature in Dakar, followed by a B.A. in Arabic and Islamic studies, and a B.A. in modern and contemporary history. His Eminence obtained a master’s degree and a doctorate from Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, as well as a state doctorate in literature from the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. His Eminence has held many positions, including being head of the Center for Islamic Studies, Research and Training; Director General of the Islamic Institute of Dakar; Inspector General of National Education; Advisor to the Head of Government. His Eminence has also worked as a lecturer at the Cheikh Anta Job University, Chair Professor at the Cheikh Anta Job University of Dakar, and Head of the Jury Committee for admission to the National School of Administration and Magistracy of Senegal. His Eminence has been a member of the Senegalese Society for Judicial Studies and Research, expert to the Human Rights Committee, consultant to UNESCO, expert to ISICO, and head of the International Scientific Committee to edit the UNESCO Encyclopedia on Islamic Culture. His Eminence has also worked as a visiting professor at the University of Memphis in the United States, where he taught pre-Islamic literature, Arabic grammar, jurisprudence, the art and method of translation, Islamic civilization in the medieval period, Islamic history, Islam in Africa, Sufism, and the history of thought.
Prof. Mbaye is the author of several books and scientific research in various scientific journals.
His Eminence has been appointed as a representative member of the Republic of Senegal to the Council of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy since November 19, 1984.
