Mr. Jawzi Lardjane, Head of the Translation Division, took part in the COP16 (Conference of the Parties) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), held on Tuesday 02 Jumada Al-Akhira 1446, corresponding to 3 December 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
This conference is a meeting between IGOs and NGOs that aims to enhance communication and cooperation between experts, activists and officials. It also includes many lectures and scientific and cultural activities throughout the duration of the conference. The conference witnessed many sessions and discussions, including the role of Islamic finance and economy in combating climate change and preserving the environment. The Islamic Development Bank, which participated in the conference, pledged an initiative to combat desertification estimated to be worth about one billion dollars.
During deliberations with representatives and officials of the Muslim world, Mr. Jawzi Lardjane suggested that the OIC should establish an affiliated organ on environmental issues, especially since the Islamic faith and civilization, through its living teachings and values, has been and remains the most environmentally friendly, noting that Muslim countries enjoy great ecological diversity and natural resources, while some of them are the most affected by climate change.
It should be noted that the conference brought together over two thousand participants from the 193 UN member states and will run until December 13, 2024.
